Kinetism (Austrian)

  • Klien, Erika Giovanna

Kinetic art's main focus is the creation of movement or the illusion of movement.  The movement originated between 1913 and 1920, when artists like Vladimir Tatlin and Naum Bago began creating works and mobiles that stressed mechanics and movement.  The term "kinetic" was first used in Realistic Manifesto (1920) by Constructivist artist Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner.  Despite this, it was not until the 1950s when artists like Jean Tinguely were creating objects to express movement, that the term was seriously used as a artistic classification.
