Juan Downey

Born 1940, Santiago, Chile

Died 1993, New York, New York

 

1961   Receives Bachelor of Arts degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.  

1961-1965   Attends Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris.  Befriends Roberto Matta and Julio Le Parc.    

1965   Travels to Washington D.C. for a solo show of his work.  Remains in Washington for a few years before moving to New York in 1969.  During this time, he expands upon his painting, drawing, writing, and printmaking and focuses on electronic sculptures, performances, and video art.    

1970   Begins teaching at the Pratt Institute in New York.  

2012   Major retrospective at the Bronx Museum, Juan Downey: The Invisible Architect.
